Indoor Plant Stand Features

Plant Stand Material

By definition, a plant stand is just something you rest your plant on to provide it with elevation, a safe spot to rest, and easier drainage. Because of this, your plant stand can be quite literally anything, from a crate you found on the side of a road to a valuable family heirloom made from rich mahogany.

The options are endless! To make deciding what you want your plant stand to be easier, I have provided descriptions and the pros and cons of the most common materials for them to be made of below.

Wood

Wooden plant stand holding a potted plant

Wood is one of the most common materials that plant stands are made of, however, there is a wide range of wood that is used and the quality can greatly differ. Some woods, like bamboo and fir wood, are much stronger than others, like plywood. Wooden plant stands are also often not weather-proof which can affect their durability if you ever place them outside. Often, wooden stands are multi-tiered since wood is such an easy material to work with.

Metal

Because metal is durable by nature, many stands can be used indoors and outdoors. Not only is metal versatile in its placement, but also in its design. Some metal plant stands may have an elegant, ornate aesthetic while others boast a more industrial look. Industrial metal plant stands tend to be multi-tiered while the more ornate ones tend to be single-tiered. Something to keep in mind is that if you are using your metal stand as an indoor plant stand make sure it has rubber feet so it doesn’t scratch up your floor.

Plastic

Plastic stands tend to be cheap, however, they also tend to be less durable and long-lasting than wood and metal ones. In a pinch, a plastic stand is great, but for heavier plants and plants you plan to have for a long time, they are not the best. They normally are weather resistant so they can be used inside or out, however, because they tend to not be the prettiest stands, they often find themselves exiled to the back porch.

Durability

When evaluating the durability of your stand consider what type of plants you are going to use it to hold, how much those plants weigh, and whether you want to use it indoors and/or outdoors. Some plant stands are made to be weather-resistant so they can function inside and out. For metal stands, because they are holding a plant that will drip water on them, make sure they are rustproof. Make sure that wooden stands are thick, quality wood that won’t lean or bend under the weight of your plants.

Design

There are so many plant stand designs to choose from! Try a single tier, multi-tier, 2-in-1, 3-in-1, pedestal, rack, table stand, or whatever else you can find. Before settling on a design, consider how many plants you want your stand to hold. Plant stands that can hold many plants are fun because you can create different plant arrangements on them, however, if you don’t have enough plants to fill the shelves, they can look noticeably empty. Also, consider if you want your plant stand to just support your plant’s beauty, or be beautiful in itself. It doesn’t just have to be the stage, it can also be part of the show!

DIY Indoor Plant Stand

Even if you are a woodworking beginner, it’s super easy to make your own plant stand! Below are instructions for a mid-century inspired plant stand that is super easy to make, not requiring much experience or money.

What You Will Need

  • 2 12” wooden pre-cut circles that are a 1/2″ thick
  • 4 3/4″ or 1″ Square Dowels
  • White Paint and Primer
  • Wood Stain
  • Power Drill
  • Tape Measure
  • Pencil
  • 8 1/2″ Wide L-Brackets

Instructions

  1. Prime and paint your wooden circles.
  2. Using your wood stain, evenly stain the dowels using a paper towel.
  3. Precisely mark the bracket connection points on your dowels 7” from the bottom of the square dowel and 2” from the top.
  4. Lay your brackets out so their holes are matched up and centered with the lines you marked. Drill pilot holes on the line and insert the screws into them, connecting the brackets. Use longer brackets on the bottom and smaller ones on the top.
  5. Mark 4 equidistant points on the circular shelves and mark them. You can find 4 equidistant points easily by dividing the circumference of your circle by 4 and marking points that align with that measurement using a measuring tape.
  6. Drill holes for bracket connection points by using the lines you just marked as a guide. Screw each bracket into the bottom of the shelves.

Top 5 Indoor Plant Stand Reviews

Best Indoor Stand for Lots of Plants

SONGMICS Bamboo Customizable 9-Tier Plant Stand

This sturdy and durable 9-tier bamboo rack is customizable and highly-functional.

      Pros:

    • Fully customizable
    • Durable bamboo structure
    • Warm, minimalist chic
      Cons:

    • Possibly off-center screw holes

This beautiful bamboo stand is fully functional and fully customizable with an astounding 9-tiers of storage. You can assemble the shelf into 1 9-tier shelf, or into 2 3-tier shelves depending on your needs. Maybe you are a total greenery goddess and have enough plants to fill up the 9-tiers or maybe you want to use one of the shelves to showcase your beautiful plants, and another to organize your toiletries in the bathroom. It doesn’t matter, this shelf is here to make your storage dreams come true.

Not only does this stand work; it’s also aesthetically-pleasing with a light brown color and adaptable frame that will accent most rooms perfectly. It has a warm, minimalist vibe to it that will absolutely not clash with any decor.

You do have to assemble it, which, I know, is a total pain. Making that task a little more aggravating is the possibility that some of your model’s pre-drilled holes may be a wee bit off-center.

However, with its inexpensive cost, and sturdy, 100% natural bamboo frame, once it’s set up it will totally be worth it. This plant rack was thoughtfully and carefully created with a smooth, natural finish, rounded corners, and countersunk screws.

It works great for all types of plants because of how sturdy the frame is, however, it’s definitely not meant to be moved outdoors, so only use it for your indoor vegetation like ivy or spider plants.

Best Indoor Stand to Showcase One Gorgeous Plant

Mkono 10” Mid Century Rustic Wooden Indoor Pot Holder

This small, beech wood flower pot holder oozes mid-century charm.

      Pros:

    • Minimalist, mid-century design
    • Durable, all-natural beech wood
    • Compliments numerous types of pots
      Cons:

    • Small

This exquisitely rustic, wooden flower pot holder uplifts the indoor spaces that it occupies adding an elegant mid-century inspired accent.

The stand was handcrafted, however, take into account that when I use the word “handcrafted” I mean that the parts of this stand were handcrafted by Mkono, while the stand itself will be handcrafted by you, because it doesn’t come fully assembled.

The stand is made from all-natural beech wood which is known for being one of the more sturdy and durable woods. That strength is further enhanced by the dowel construction method incorporated into this plant stand’s design.

The design is inspired by the mid-century and comes in 4 sizes and 3 colors. It accents your plants, and the room it’s in with its subtle style.

It’s fairly inexpensive however it is small and only holds one plant. The pot you choose to pair with it will greatly impact its elegance. It’s recommended that you use a white, ceramic, or brass pot with this stand.

If you are looking to store your plants in a room’s corner, and appreciate a minimalist style, this is a great plant stand for you. It works well with smaller, clean-looking, indoor plants like cacti and succulents.

Best Multi-Plant Option on a Budget

3-in-1 Iron Potted Plant Stand Rack

This ornate, iron plant stand has three interlocking bases which enables creative plant arrangements.

      Pros:

    • Inexpensive
    • Holds 3 plants
    • Ornate design
      Cons:

    • Not the sturdiest

Pairing an elegant, ornate design with functionality, this iron potted plant stand possesses the capability to hold 3 plants on 1 rack.

It’s an inexpensive option for someone who needs a stand for a few of their plants, presenting the opportunity to group plants together in creative and artistic ways on its interlinking stands. Pair together some flowers, herbs, succulents, or whatever else you can think of that would look gorgeous on this beautiful stand.

Not only do you have options in your pairings, but also in what color you get this stand in since it comes both in black and bronze.

This stand is not just a pretty base, it’s also durable, with a steel structure that is built to last, and it’s extremely easy to clean.

This plant stand is best for rooms that would benefit from its bold ornate style, and people who have many plants. Obviously, if you don’t have 3 plants, this is not the stand for you. It can hold pants that are up to 9”, but keep in mind that its lightweight structure may struggle with really heavy plants. This plant stand works particularly great for indoor flower arrangements.

Most Durable Indoor-Outdoor Plant Stand

Ulfine 3-Tier Wooden Plant Stand

This durable plant stand made from 5-year old carbonized fir wood can be used inside or outside your house.

      Pros:

    • Works indoors and outdoors
    • Dark color
    • Made tough by the carbonization process
      Cons:

    • Not wind-resistant

Made from 5-year old fir wood that is harvested in an environmentally sustainable way, this plant stand is eco-friendly and aesthetic-friendly, complimenting rooms with its dark wooden accent.

The wood is carbonized at a temperature of 300 C to give it a great color, and strength. It can easily hold the weight of all 3 levels of your plants.

You can use it indoors or outdoors, in your living room, kitchen, bedroom, garden, or porch, because due to the carbonization process it’s water, wear, and weather-resistant. However, be wary of wind because if you are balancing a lot of plants on it there is the possibility that it will topple.

They advertise it as allowing you to enjoy the “fun of the DIY process” which is code for it not coming assembled. It’s a little trickier to put together than some of the other racks on the list, but screws and instructions are included.

It’s on the pricier side for plant stands, however, its quality makes it a bargain. This plant stand works great for people with up to 6 plants of varying sizes, who want to store them either indoors or outdoors.

Best High-End Plant Stand for Large Plants

Coaster Home Furnishings Cherry Round Plant Stand Table

This elegant plant stand with a dark cherry finish will add subtle romance to any room it occupies, flawlessly showcasing your plants.

      Pros:

    • Dark cherry finish
    • 2 plant holding spaces
    • High quality
      Cons:

    • Color could clash
    • Expensive

This solid, high-quality plant stand will not disappoint. It’s expensive, however, it is capable of dealing with heavy plants and will last you a long time.

There are two tiers on this plant stand, the bottom which can handle smaller plants like succulents, and the top which is 18” and can handle much bigger plants like ivy. With a simple and elegant design, this plant stand showcases your plants, making them look good but drawing very little attention to itself. Like the other stands on this list, this plant stand comes unassembled, however, the assembly process is very easy and downright intuitive.

Its color is dark cherry, which may clash with your furniture if you have no dark cherry pieces.  It can also be a little awkward to balance if you are placing it on a thick carpet. This plant stand is perfect for traditional spaces which it compliments with its elegant charm. You can use just the top of the stand, or both the bottom and top to hold plants.

Conclusion

Are you curious to know who we consider the winner to be? Can you not STAND to wait a moment longer? Alright, alright, don’t worry. The best plant stand, in our professional opinion, is the Ulfine 3-Tier Wooden Plant Stand. It blew the competition away because of its gorgeous color, endearing design, and versatility, with the capabilities to hold up to 6 plants and be used indoors and outdoors.

All of these plant stands are great though, and depending on your room aesthetic, where you want your plant stand, and how many plants you need it to hold, another one on this list could be the best one for you.
