Why do people attend all these BBQ competitions?

I can understand why going to a BBQ competition is a wonderful thing for people who love barbecue. What is the draw for all the competition? Why does anyone get into it? Is it for the prestige? Do they win that much money? It seems like an expensive hobby and a lot of work to me. I love barbecue and am curious why and where all these competitors come from.

A lot of competitors have BBQ restaurants and it's a matter of wanting to prove they are the best. For others, I think it's a passion, just like any other hobby. I have a hope of someday competing for both professional and hobbyist reasons.

That is a great answer Cowboy - I wondered the same thing. Of course it's for bragging rights and a great way to market the business too. I have never been to a competition but I would love to go and sample everything.

I am not sure how big the prize money is, but I think that is only a minor reason for competing. People who BBQ are serious about their recipes, just like anyone else is in their hobby. They want to prove they are the best, and gain recognition. I have only attended a small competition, and boy, those guys meant business! I can only imagine how hardcore, a huge competition would be!

I think they enjoy going from place to place pitting their recipe against the rest. One year a bunch of us formed a group and entered a competition to raise money for charity. Our team was called the "Cheek Squeekers" and we had so much fun doing it. But I really enjoy sampling the different recipes most of all.

I would love to go to one of these competitions one day to eat...not to cook! I think a lot of people just really enjoy it. Plus it looks good on advertising! :)

I have never known of a person that just did it to do it, comp wise that is. For our uncle its a tradition that he has done for years on end and has never missed a show. For us we like to go and learn more about it to better our backyard works.

I am with everyone else, I don't think the money has a lot to do with it. The most I have personally seen some one win was ten grand, and while that seems like a lot of money, after travel time, cook time, buying meat, and every thing else, I don't se there being a huge profit margin. Also, if they have a restaurant in the area, it's pretty much advertising while having fun.

This is a pretty easy question. The chefs and cooks compete for prestige and the love of cooking. Spectators attend for the love of cooking, and to try some of that tasty food. I think sometimes the prizes for these competitions are pretty important...like winning a spot on FoodTV's Chopped.

I go to eat and sample the food :)

There are many great chefs and restaurants there usually and they are pulling out all the big guns to impress people. This means there is some really yummy and exotic foods there. I recommend checking one out. I bet you'll love it!

I too get to eat and sample the food for free. I just want to filter which restaurant makes the best barbecue in town so I and my family could go there whenever we're in the mood to eat barbeque.

If you own a restaurant it's all about getting to hang that plaque on the wall that says you are the best. If you BBQ as a hobby, I think it is more for the competition and the fun of going up against other people.

I think most people attend BBQ competitions just as a hobby. A lot of people really like grilling and enjoy talking to others about any tips that they may have. Perhaps they can get a recipe that they have been dying to have. A lot of times at these BBQ competitions there will be free samples of the food as well. This is another reason people like to attend the competitions.

They are passionate about barbecuing and they want to prove they are the best, it is the competition. I have never competed personally but I imagine it must be fun and exciting to compete against fellow barbecue enthusiasts. The prize money is another incentive.

Well if you own a BBQ shop and win it makes something that makes your shop look even better.. I know a lot of spectators go just for the food. (I know I would) but for the most part of your question is to make their shop look better.

I think they mainly do it for love of barbecue. Getting a chance to showcase their talents can be very enthralling, plus picking up hints and tips from their competition doesn't hurt, either!

I would love to go to one, not so much to cook at one but to walk around and be a taste tester :)
Restaurants have a great advantage to being in them. If you could show off that you won a big competition, you will have new customers. They will be in newspapers and so many other places that will give them added exposure. Being at the competition and serving new people who like your food, they can become new customers and many will be for a long time too.

It is definitely about the prestige. In some places being the BBQ King or Queen is like being real royalty. And like someone else said, most people own their own restaurants or food trucks so winning these competitions drives a lot of business in their doors and puts money in their pocket.

I would go just to sample the different barbecue, sauces and other food they have. I also enjoy being around the people. They usually have some kind of entertainment, so it's a lot of fun.

I think that a lot of people go to these barbecue competitions just to see who will win first place. A lot of people (especially Americans) love to show off their barbecue techniques for everyone to see. It's a big past time in this country. I've never been to a barbecue competition before but I would love to go. Especially if there's gonna be good food and lots of people there.
