If you’re thinking about starting a vegetable garden from scratch, one of the most important decisions you’ll have to make is choosing the right location. There are a few things to keep in mind when selecting a spot for your garden, including sunlight, soil, and water.

Sunlight –  Most vegetables need at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight each day in order to thrive so it is important to select a location where your garden will get adequate light.

Pro tip: If you live in an area with high winds, you’ll need to take extra steps to protect your young plants. Building a windbreak or choosing a location near a fence or other structures can help shield your garden from strong gusts.

Soil – Vegetables need rich, well-drained soil in order to grow. If your soil is of poor quality, you can amend it with compost or other organic matter. Additionally, if your soil isn’t well-draining, you may want to consider planting your garden in a raised bed or in containers.

Watering your vegetable garden is one of the most important tasks you will perform. Without adequate water, your plants will suffer and may even die. While there are many factors to consider when watering your garden, such as the type of plants you are growing, the time of year, and the amount of rainfall in your area, there are some general guidelines that will help you keep your plants healthy and hydrated.

When watering your garden is important to water deeply and slowly. This allows the water to penetrate the soil and reach the roots of your plants.

Morning, before the heat of the day sets in, is the best time to water your garden. This allows the water to evaporate less quickly and gives your plants time to absorb it before the sun dries them out. Watering in the evening can also be beneficial, as it will help keep the soil moist overnight.

Finally, be sure to check your soil regularly to see how dry it is. Depending on the type of soil you have, you may need to water more or less frequently.
