All You Need to Know About Snow Blowers

A snowblower is an outdoor winter appliance designed to suck up snow at high speeds and redirect it somewhere else.

Oftentimes, a snowblower is confused with snow throwers and electric snow shovels. While there are differences between the three, they essentially have the same purpose.

At the end of the day, all of them are made to help you have an easier time clearing the snow in your yard. These appliances help you shovel your driveway with ease, and all you need to do is choose your unit wisely, use it properly, and provide regular maintenance.

Snow Blower Size Guide

Snow blower size can be differentiated by their snow clearance capacity. For this guide, we’ll be including electric snow shovels, snow throwers, and multi-stage snow blowers to help you find the best snow blower for you.

When choosing between the different snow blower sizes, refer to the typical depth of snow cover you deal with in your area.

For up to 6 inches of snow

When you have up to 6 inches of snow in your area on average, the smartest investment for you is an electric snow shovel. These shovels are similar to snow blowers but have a few key differences. As the name states, these are powered by electricity rather than gas and are built with a comfortable handle rod and easily maneuverable through smaller spaces. They can also be plugged into a socket or have a cordless rechargeable design.

You push this through wet snow and it’ll suck it up and throw it a few feet away. It’s best for clearing flat terrain and light snow.

For up to 12 inches of snow

For areas with moderate snowfall up to 12 inches deep, a snow thrower is right up your alley. A snow thrower is also known as a single-stage snow blower and can be powered with gas or electricity. They work by sucking up the snow and throwing it off of your path’s surface in a single motion. Single-stage models are especially useful for clearing your paved driveways, sidewalks, and other paved surfaces.

Single-stage models are light and maneuverable even though they can be bulky and come with big drive wheels and large push handles.

For up to 18 inches of snow

If your average snowfall reaches up to 18 inches of snowfall on the ground, a two-stage snow blower may be what you need. Two-stage blowers can handle thick and heavy amounts of snow on uneven ground thanks to their larger wheels and high clearance.

Two-stage models suck up snow and use the second-stage auger to break apart compacted material and discharge it through their chute. Two-stage blowers tend to be pricier, bulkier, and tricky to maintain.

For more than 18 inches of snow

For places that get more than 18-inch deep snow, a three-stage snow blower might be worth considering. These snow blowers save you a lot of time by quickly working through wet and heavy snowfall and come with high-powered chutes to throw your snow far, far away.

They’re heavy-duty blowers with a powerful engine that work well even on very rough terrain, unpaved surfaces, or sloped driveways. Just like the two-stage snow blower, three-stage blowers suck up snow and use two augers to break apart heavy chunks. Its third stage also works to propel snow out faster through its chute. Not everyone needs this but, if you want the best of the best and peace of mind, this is usually where it’s at.
